13 Disability Categories

To be eligible for special education aPhoto of Group of Childrennd related services, a child must be in the age range of birth to 22 years of age and meet criteria in two areas outlined in Title 34 of the Code of Federal Regulations, section 300.8: (1) The child must be identified as a child with exceptional needs in one or more of the 13 disability categories defined under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004; and (2) the child's disability adversely affects his/her educational performance, and the child is therefore in need of special education.

It is important to note that under IDEA, a child must meet a two-prong test to be considered a child with a disability: (1) have one of the specified disabilities; and (2) because of the disability, needs special education and related services.

The following outlines the definitions of each of the disability categories established under the IDEA, 2004:
