For many years now, the importance of managing, tracking, and sending the most accurate student information to the California Department of Education (CDE) has been somewhat overlooked. We go about our day not realizing how important it is to be able to stand by the data we represent when it comes to our students with special needs.

Starting with the 2010-11 school year, CDE has requested many more data uploads to their system so that they can analyze what services are being provided to students with special needs across the state. This has definitely brought additional eyes to review the data much more closely. The requests for more student data is at an all-time high in regards to certain criteria and compliance standards set forth by CDE.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel! This intense review of student data has brought to light several wonderful changes for all students with special needs. Changes in programs, location, and staff development, just to name a few, have been instrumental in the progression of what works in the life of a child. Yes, it is data, but data equals students. What better way to tell the story of our students than to have good data, to prove what works and what needs adjustments. All the new requests from CDE over the years have allowed us to re-examine how we provide services to students, families, and the community we serve.

Never think that the data we collect is unimportant. Accurate student data, is something we can stand by, it allows the story of each child to be heard. So when you are struggling with more requests that are being put on you, remember… it’s more than just data, it’s a student, a person, and their future.
